Wagner Advances to Singles Final in Cary

CARY, N.C. – The Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team posted eight wins in all and 18th-ranked Stephanie Wagner advanced to the singles final of the top flight of the Duke Fab Four Invite on Saturday.

In a rain-soaked day two of the tournament in Cary, N.C., the women’s portion of the event was moved to North Carolina’s facility, where indoor and outdoor courts were utilized. Also due to rain, all doubles matches were moved back to Sunday.

Wagner, a junior from Amberg, Germany, defeated Florida’s Peggy Porter in straight sets before knocking off North Carolina’s Carolina Price 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals of the top singles flight in the tournament. She will face off against 14th-ranked Brianna Morgan of Florida on Sunday.

In one of the most impressive wins of the day, Clementina Riobueno defeated Virginia’s 32nd-ranked Stephanie Nauta 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. In her next round, Riobueno fell to Florida’s Brooke Austin 7-5, 6-2. The junior will compete against North Carolina’s Hayley Carter in a third place match tomorrow.

Hurricane freshman Wendy Zhang posted some impressive results on Day 2 of the tournament, defeating Furman’s Karlee Bryde in straight sets before taking down North Carolina’s Marika Akkerman 7-6(1), 6-1.

Silvia Fuentes and Sinead Lohan, the two other Canes’ newcomers competing this weekend, each split both of their matches on the day. After falling to Oklahoma State’s Viktoriya Lushkova 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5), she bounced back to defeat Duke’s Rachel Kahan 6-0, 6-4 in a fifth-place match. Fuentes dropped her first match of the day to Alabama’s Maya Jansen, but fought back later in the day to pick up a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 win against San Jose State’s Marie Klocker.

Senior Monique Albuquerque started off Saturday with a straight sets win 6-3, 6-4 against Ole Miss’ Natalie Suk. In her next match, Albuquerque was bested by Alabama’s Erin Routliffe 6-4, 7-6(3).
