CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami outfielder Tyler Palmer became the sixth Hurricane selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday afternoon, when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim selected him in the 21st round. He was selected No. 629 overall.

Palmer, who was named a team captain prior to the 2014 season, led the Hurricanes in a number of offensive categories. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native led the Hurricanes with 19 stolen bases and four triples, and served as one of Miami’s catalysts in the lineup.

The starting left fielder finished second on the team with 47 runs scored, 70 hits and 15 doubles, and missed only one game all spring.

Palmer also delivered numerous clutch hits for the Hurricanes in 2014, including the game-winning hit in a 16-inning marathon against North Carolina (May 16).

Palmer was the sixth Hurricane to be selected in the 2014 MLB Draft, joining Andrew Suarez (second round, Washington Nationals), Chris Diaz (fifth round, Atlanta Braves), Dale Carey (seventh round, Washington), Bryan Radziewski (ninth round, Houston Astros) and Javi Salas (10th round, Milwaukee Brewers).
