W. Hoops to Face Florida State in ACC Tourney
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — After ending the regular season with three-straight wins, the Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team has earned the 8-seed in the ACC Tournament set to be played on Mar. 5 through Mar. 9 in Greensboro, N.C.
Miami (16-13, 8-8 ACC) will face the 9-seed Florida State Seminoles on Thursday, Mar. 6 at 2 p.m. The Seminoles concluded the regular season with a 19-10 overall record and 7-9 in ACC play.
Just five games ago, the Hurricanes went to Tallahassee and came away with a three-point win, propelling Katie Meier’s squad to a strong finish that saw them earn four victories in their last five games.
In the first matchup against Florida State on Jan. 9, the then 18th-ranked Seminoles squeaked out a five-point win over the Hurricanes in Coral Gables.
The winner of Thursday’s game will face top-seeded and 2nd-ranked Notre Dame on Friday at 2 p.m.
The new-look tournament will feature all 15 ACC teams and 14 games, beginning with three first-round matchups on Wednesday. Four second-round games are scheduled for Thursday, followed by the quarterfinals on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday evening and the championship game on Sunday at 7 p.m.
Top-seeded Notre Dame (29-0, 16-0 ACC), second-seeded Duke (25-5, 12-4), third-seeded Maryland (24-5, 12-4) and fourth-seeded NC State (24-6, 11-5) will receive byes into Friday’s quarterfinal round.
Tournament play begins at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, with No. 12 seed Virginia Tech (14-15, 4-12) facing No. 13 Clemson (12-18, 4-12) . Wednesday’s second game will find No. 10 Virginia (13-16, 6-10) facing No. 15 Boston College (12-18, 3-13) at 3:30 p.m. First-round action concludes Wednesday at 6:30 pm., with No. 11 Wake Forest (14-15, 5-11) facing No. 14 Pitt (11-19, 3-13).
The winner of Friday’s first two games will meet in Saturday’s 5 p.m. semifinal game, while the winners of the Friday evening session will meet Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The championship game of the 2014 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be played Sunday at 7 p.m.
All 14 games of this year’s tournament are set to be televised. The first, second and quarterfinal rounds will be carried by the league’s regional sports network, RSN. Both of Saturday evening’s semifinal games will be carried nationally by ESPNU, while a national audience will watch Sunday’s championship game via ESPN. All games will also be available via ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
