Cheerleading, Dancing Tryouts Dates Announced

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami Sunsations and cheerleading teams are hosting tryouts for students interested in joining their squads.

SUNSATIONS DANCE TEAM AUDITIONS:

Auditions will be held at the Knight Sports Complex Gym, next to the Hecht Athletic Center (5821 San Amaro Drive) on Sunday, April 12th from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Monday, April 13th from 6:30 p.m. till finish. You must attend both days and registration begins promptly at 10 a.m. on the 12th.

Applicants must submit the completed audition application (provided auditions) along with a headshot. Audition attire should include form-fitting, midriff bearing dance attire with full hair and make-up.

Evaluations will be based on a pom, hip hop and jazz routine (all taught at auditions) as well as across the floor work looking for attitude, projections, extension, and overall impression, along with any additional dance skills (high kicks, toe touch, split leaps, etc.).

As the official dance team for the Miami Hurricanes, the Sunsations are treated as athletes at the University with access to tutors, trainers and medical staff as well as are awarded a stipend each semester. Additionally members receive all sponsored athletic apparel and uniforms.

All candidates must be full-time students at the University of Miami or have been accepted and plan to attend UM for the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters. Candidates will need to submit their C-number.

Video tryouts will be accepted only under special circumstances.

ALL GIRL AND COED CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS:

Tryouts will be held at the Knight Sports Complex Gym, next to the Hecht Athletic Center (5821 San Amaro Drive) on Sunday, April 19th from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. and Monday, April 20th from 6:30 p.m. till finish.

Female candidates are to wear form-fitting clothing and “game day” hair (ponytails are prohibited) and makeup. Candidates should show how they would prepare themselves for a game. Sports bras and midriffs are necessary for the second day of tryouts.

Females will be evaluated on a cheer, dance, standing and running tumbling, and stunt technique. All cheers and dances will be taught at tryouts.Tumbling requirement includes Standing tucks, standing-back handspring, round-off back handspring series, and round-off back handspring back.

For male candidates, no formal cheerleading experience is necessary, but should have a love of sports and fitness. The majority of males’ first experience with cheerleading is at tryouts and practices.
