The Game
The Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team opens its 2013-14 campaign at the  BankUnited Center on Friday, Nov. 8 with tipoff set for 5 p.m.

Head coach Katie Meier’s team features five newcomers and six returners, including starters Suriya McGuire and Krystal Saunders. The team’s newcomers include freshman Adrienne Motley, Nigia Greene and Jessica Thomas, and juniors Necole Sterling and Jassany Williams.

Friday night is filled with festivities at Miami’s Homecoming, beginning with the women’s game at 5 p.m., followed by Hurricane Howl at 7 p.m., which includes the pep rally, boat burning, fireworks and finishing with the men’s hoops game against St. Francis Brooklyn at 10 p.m.

The Series
The Hurricanes and the Ospreys have faced off two times in history, with the most recent coming last season when Miami handled UNF easily, 77-24. In 2009, the Canes blew away the Ospreys by a score of 80-36. Miami’s average margin of victory in the series is 48.5 points.

Broadcast
The Hurricanes’ season-opener will be picked up by Miami’s student radio station, 90.5 WVUM. It will also be available on WVUM.org. A live stream of the game will also be available for CanesAllAccess members. 

Katie Meier
Coach Meier enters her ninth year at the helm in Coral Gables, and looks to continue upon the success that the team has had in recent years. The Hurricanes have been to three consecutive NCAA tournaments and have posted 20+ wins in each of the past four seasons. Meier holds a career record of 223-151 and a record of 146-106 in her eight seasons at Miami.

The Offseason
During the offseason, Meier led the USA U19 team to a gold medal at the FIBA World Championship games in Lithuania. In the hotel before the first game of the tournament, Meier received this video from the team:

After the 2013 season, three women’s basketball players signed professional contracts—Morgan Stroman, Stefanie Yderstrom, and Shawnice “Pepper” Wilson. The total number of Miami players under Meier to sign professional contracts is now up to 12.
