@HurricanesGolf Slips to Third at Betsy Rawls
AUSTIN, Texas – A day after their record-setting opening round, the Miami Hurricanes are in third place through 36 holes Monday at the 40th Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.
Miami entered the second round with a five-stroke lead. The Hurricanes shot a second-round 292 and are at 8-under 568, five strokes behind leader UCLA (13-under 563) and three strokes behind second-place Arizona State (10-under 566). Miami’s two-day 568 shattered the 36-hole program record set earlier this month in Austin at the Challenge at Onion Creek (292-286=578).
The Hurricanes are five strokes ahead of fourth-place Iowa State (3-under 573) and seven ahead of fifth-place Mississippi State (1-under 575).
First-round co-leader Daniela Darquea shot a second-round 72 and is in fourth place at 5-under 139. Darquea is two strokes behind co-leaders Alison Lee (UCLA) and Jessica Peng (Mississippi State) at 7-under 137. Iowa State’s Cajsa Persson is in third at 6-under 138.
Darquea’s two-day 139 is the second-lowest 36-hole score in program history, two strokes behind Jessica Steward’s 137 set at the 2006 GSU / Pelican Preserve Invitational. Darquea has carded nine birdies and is 5-under on the Par 4 holes through 36 holes.
Sophomore Kailey Walsh fired a 73 to finish Monday tied for 11th at 2-under 142. Walsh leads the field with a 3-under tally on the Par 3 holes.
Miami leads the tournament field with a team tally of 6-under on the course’s Par 3 holes and is the only school under-par on the Par 3s through 36 holes. Miami’s 32 birdies are the second-most among the tournament field, behind only Arizona State (34).
The final round of the 40th Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational will tee off Tuesday morning. Live scoring will be available at www.birdiefire.com. For the latest information, follow the Miami Hurricanes women’s golf team on Twitter, @HurricanesGolf.
