@HurricanesGolf Finishes Second in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Behind a pair of top-10 finishes, Miami’s final-round push fell just short Tuesday as the Hurricanes posted a solid second-place showing at the Challenge at Onion Creek.

Miami held a one-stroke lead through 12 holes after shooting 3-over on the front nine. The Canes 8-over on the back nine to finish three strokes behind Texas Tech. Miami’s final-round 286 is the second-lowest team score in program history, behind only its third-round 281 at the Beacon Woods Invitational on Oct. 11, 1987.

Miami, Texas Tech and Coastal Carolina each carded a tournament-low 286 on the final day. The Red Raiders finished 28-over 868, three strokes ahead of Miami (293-292-286=871). Kansas and Coastal Carolina tied for third at 35-over 875, while host Texas State finished fifth at 45-over 885.

“We through we had it, but we messed up a little bit in the end,” fourth-year head coach Patti Rizzo said. “The team is playing great. All five are so solid; it’s going to be an exciting year.

“We’re a little young, but with a little experience, we will be amazing,” Rizzo. “Look at the great scores from this tournament. In my 10 years of coaching, this is the best team I’ve ever had.”

Texas Tech’s Elin Arvidsson was the only golfer to finish the tournament under par, winning by a four-stroke margin over teammate Kimmy Hill.

Thanks to a season-low 1-under 69 in the final round, junior Leticia Ras-Anderica posted her eighth career top-10 finish with a fifth-place showing at 5-over 215.

Freshmen Delfina Acosta and Daniela Darquea turned in their best performances of their short college careers. Acosta tied for seventh at 8-over 218, while Darquea tied for 11th at 9-over 75. Sophomore Kailey Walsh shot a final-round 70 to finish 13th at 10-over 220. Junior Rika Park tied for 33rd at 19-over 229.

Miami will return to Austin later this month when it concludes its fall schedule Oct. 13-15 at Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational. For the latest information, follow the Miami Hurricanes women’s golf team on Twitter, @HurricanesGolf.
