CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program has made several additions to its coaching staff.

Miami director of track and field and cross country Amy Deem announced the addition of Jerel Langley and Shannon Hatchett as assistant coaches. Deem also announced that Cory Young has been promoted to associate head coach.

We are excited about the changes to our staff,” Deem said. “The two new additions and one promotion strengthen the Miami track and field program. I am thankful to our athletic administration for their commitment to track and field, which has allowed us to attract some of the best young coaching talent in the country.  Their passion, ability to recruit and vision for Miami track and field will take us places we have never been as a program.”

Langley, who will coach jumps and multi-events, comes to Miami after spending three years at Eastern Michigan. He has also been an assistant coach at Kennesaw State and saw his student-athletes excel at both universities.

At Eastern Michigan, Langley helped high jumper Tatijana Jacobson earn a spot in the field at the 2013 USA Outdoor Senior Nationals. Langley also coached Alysha Newman to Canadian Junior National records in the indoor and outdoor pole vault, as well as the Pan-American Junior Championship meet record at 4.40m. Newman also earned second-team All-America honors at the 2013 Indoor Nationals.

Langley also coached Kate Wolanin to Eastern Michigan’s first MAC Indoor Pentathlon Championship and guided Meghan Powers to a second place finish in the indoor pole vault at the MAC Championships. In Langley’s first year at EMU, he coached Jessica Hemingway to second-team All-America honors and helped her break the school’s records for both indoor and outdoor pole vault.

Overall, Langley coached five MAC individual champions, 10 All-MAC performers, had six student-athletes qualify for the NCAA East Regional and guided his student-athletes towards setting seven school records at Eastern Michigan.

While at Kennesaw State, Langley was the program’s recruiting coordinator and also coached javelin, pole vault and multi-events. Fifteen Owls were named All-Atlantic Sun in Langley’s two years at Kennesaw State. Additionally, 12 school records were broken in those two years and five conference championships were claimed. The men’s team won the conference Triple Crown in Langley’s first year on staff.

Langley attended Gardner-Webb University, where he was a member of the school’s track and field team. After graduating from GWU in 2008 with a degree in sport management, Langley went to Kennesaw State where he received his master’s degree in applied exercise and health science. A native of Cumming, Ga., Langley is married to the former Ashley Hall.

Coach Langley was very successful in recruiting and developing student-athletes at Eastern Michigan,” Deem said. “I am confident with the resources at Miami he will achieve even greater success here.

Hatchett joins the Canes after spending six of the past eight years at Florida State. From 2005-09, Hatchett was a hurdler on the FSU track and field team. The following school year she was a student coach and manager for the Seminoles. Hatchett rejoined the Seminoles in 2012-13 as a volunteer coach.

Hatchett worked with the sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams, helping lead the Seminoles to the 2013 ACC Outdoor Championship. Under the guidance of Hatchett, 10 Seminoles were honored as All-Americans.

As a student-athlete, Hatchett was a two-time ACC Honor Roll selection and a member of the Women’s Indoor/Outdoor ACC team in her final year.

Hatchett is a USATF Level I certified coach and received her bachelor’s degree in business marketing and finance from Florida State in 2010. A native of Gainesville, Fla., she is married to Brent Hatchett.

Coach Hatchett will be a great asset to Coach West and I in the sprints and hurdles,” Deem said.  She brings a strong desire to make a difference in young peoples lives and is passionate about coaching.

Young earned a promotion to associate head coach after a stellar first season in Coral Gables.

Miami’s throws coach joined the program in the fall of 2012 and immediately helped his student-athletes shine as Isaiah Simmons, Lea Johnson and Amber Monroe all qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary.

Simmons was the ACC champion in shot put for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The redshirt freshman also broke Miami’s nearly 13-year-old indoor shot put record with a mark of 18.17m and set new outdoor records in shot put (18.89m), discus (54.41m) and hammer (51.46m) records.

On the women’s side, Johnson climbed the Miami record books in her sophomore season peaking at No. 3 in school history in women’s hammer with a throw of 56.54m. She also set a personal best in the weight throw at the ACC Indoor Championships with a mark of 18.85m.

Monroe also shined in her first season working with Young, earning three wins in women’s discus and one in women’s shot put. She also set indoor personal-bests in the shot put (13.58m) and weight throw (15.77m).

Young previously coached two student-athletes to All-America status at Kentucky and had 33 All-Americans and four national champions while coaching at Grand Valley State.

A 2005 graduate of the University of Indianapolis with a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems, Young was a two-time All-American in the weight throw and was also a two-time outdoor national qualifier in the hammer and discus.

“Coach Young has all the qualities of being a head coach in the future and we are fortunate to have those qualities on our staff,” Deem said. “He has tremendous vision, not only for our throws program but the team as a whole.”

Miami’s track and field staff consists of Deem, who coached Team USA in the 2012 Olympics, distance coach Damon Griffiths, sprints and hurdles coach Devin West, Young, Langley and Hatchett.

“We have a coaching staff that brings excellence, integrity, passion, and an environment of family to their coaching every day, a staff that is truly committed to our student-athletes and their overall development as young people,” Deem said.
