Ahoure Second at Track World Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former Hurricane sprinter Murielle Ahoure became the first African to medal in the women’s 100m dash when she placed second in the event at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Ahoure, who won a national championship as a Hurricane in 2009, finished the 100m final in 10.93 seconds to take the silver. The Ivory Coast native, who is set to compete in the 200m beginning Thursday, is the first African to medal in the women’s 100m.

“I am very proud of her accomplishment,” Miami director of track and field and cross country Amy Deem said. ” Murielle has worked very hard to become the World Championship runner up. This is a dream come true for her.”

In her lone season with the Hurricanes, Ahoure was named All-America on four occasions and won the indoor 200-meter dash national championship. She won four ACC titles and was named the USTFCCCA South Region Performer of the Year in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
