Track Wraps Up at ACC Outdoor Championships

RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Miami track & field program wrapped up competition at the 2013 ACC Outdoor Championships Saturday.

The Hurricane women received a big boost in the team competition, scoring all 27 of their points in Saturday’s final day of competition.

Miami’s 4x400m relay team placed third with a season-best time of 3:39.81. Shannon Wright, Taneisha Cordell, Alaine Tate and Jokira Jiles combined to earn the Miami women their final six points of the 2013 ACC Outdoor Championships.

Along with helping the relay team, Cordell and Tate each contributed to the women’s team score through their performance in the women’s 800m. Cordell placed sixth, scoring three points, with a time of 2:08.11. Tate added two points, as her time of 2:13.34 slotted her seventh in the final.

Lea Johnson finished third in the women’s hammer throw, scoring six points for Miami’s women’s team. The sophomore posted a personal-best mark of 184’ 4”, securing a third place finish and moving to No. 3 all-time in Miami history.

Senior Samantha Williams placed fifth in the women’s triple jump with a season-best mark of 41’ 9.75”. The All-American scored four points for Miami’s women’s team score.

Kelsey Balkwill chipped in with three points towards the women’s team score. The redshirt freshman finished sixth in the women’s 200m with a time of 24.96 seconds.

Alyssa McClure placed seventh in the women’s 100m with a time of 12.11 seconds. The junior added two points to the Hurricane women’s team score.

Alexis Wright placed eighth in the women’s 100m hurdles final, adding one point to the women’s team score. The freshman set a new personal record with a time of 14.59 seconds. Wright also competed in the women’s triple jump, posting a mark of 36’ 4”.

Christian Cook was one of three student-athletes to individually score for the men’s team on Saturday. The sophomore picked up four points for Miami’s men with a fifth place finish in the men’s 400m hurdles. Cook, who also ran the men’s 110m hurdles, posted a personal-best time of 52.92 seconds.

Cook was also part of the men’s 4x400m relay team that finished sixth, earning three points for the Hurricanes. Cook, Anthony Wolliston, Bassim El-Sabawi and Joseph Ryan combined to finish in a season-best 3:16.47.

Jumpers Tim Richardson and John-Patrick Friday each scored for the men’s team. Richardson, a sophomore who posted a mark of 48’ 7.25”, scored two points for Miami with his seventh place finish in the men’s triple jump.

Friday’s mark of 48’ 4.75” earned him an eighth place finish in the men’s triple jump and added one point to the men’s team tally. The freshman picked up three more points for the Hurricane men when he finished sixth in the men’s high jump, clearing 6’ 9.75”.

Isaiah Simmons finished his first ACC Outdoor Championships with a hammer throw of 143’ 2”. Simmons was a standout for Miami, winning the men’s shot put and placing third in men’s discus. The redshirt freshman was named men’s field MVP of the 2013 ACC Outdoor Championships

Dakota Dailey-Harris finished 10th in the women’s high jump at her first ACC Outdoor Championships. The freshman cleared 5’ 7”, finishing just 1.25” shy of scoring for Miami.

Lindsi Arrington finished the women’s 1500m in 4:36.26. The junior also ran the women’s 5000m, finishing in a season-best 17:43.47. Sophomore Taylor Votek also ran the women’s 5000m, finishing the race in a personal-best 19:15.39.

Junior Luke Fontaine competed in the men’s 5000m, finishing the race in a season-best 15:45.15.

Miami’s women’s team scored 27 points, finishing 11th at the 2013 ACC Outdoor Championships. The Canes men scored 36 points, finishing ninth.
