T&F Sets School Record at VT Elite

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Miami track and field set a new schoolrecord in the final day of competition at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet atRector Field House.

The men’sdistance medley relay team of Luke Fontaine, Christian Cook, Douglas Douradoand Greg Kaczka finished fourth in the event. Kaczka, who ran the 1600m part ofthe DMR in 4:10.887, helped the team set a new Miami record with a time of 10:02.83.

“Greg continues to have a stellar seniorseason and anchored the DMR to a school record,” Deem said.

The menwere not the only Canes relay team to have success Saturday as the women’srelay team of Jokira Jiles, Taneisha Cordell, Alaine Tate and Shannon Wrightfinished third in the 4x400m final with a time of 3:43.379.

“Alaine and Taneisha continue to improve andcompete hard each week,” Deem said. “They both ran well in their open eventsand ran tough on the relay.”

Miami’swomen finished the weekend with several strong performances.

All-American Samantha Williams finished second in the women’striple jump, posting a mark of 42′ 0.75″. The senior placed fifth in thewomen’s long jump on Friday.

Several other female athletes joined Williams with strongperformances. Freshman Jamika Glades finished fifth in the women’s 400m,posting a time of 56.87 seconds.

Junior Alyssa McClure and sophomore Amber Monroe each earned sixthplace finishes in their respective events Saturday. McClure ran the women’s200m in 24.32 seconds, while Monroe throw in the women’s shot put traveled 43’6″.

Freshman John-Patrick Friday stood out for the men’s program.Friday finished fifth in the men’s triple jump with a mark of 47′ 4.5″ andplaced seventh in the high jump, clearing 6′ 8.75″.

Sophomore Tim Richardson finished just behind Friday in the triplejump, covering 47′ 3.5″, while sophomore Innocent Jacob finished tied withFriday in the men’s high jump.

Other men’s track athletes posting top five finishes include juniorBassim El-Sabawi, who finished fifth in the men’s 200m final with a time of22.31 seconds, and sophomore Sean Pezzulo, who placed fourth in the men’s5000m, posting a time of 15:05.20.
