T&F Finishes Strong at Kentucky Invite

LEXINGTON,Ky. – Freshman Isaiah Simmons set an indoorschool record in the shot put to lead the Miami track and field teams in thefinal day of the Kentucky Invitational Saturday at Nutter Field House. TheHurricanes had 14 top-five finishes across the board, with five runner-upplacings on the day.

Simmons finished second in the shot put,logging a mark of 17.87m to set the UM indoor record in his debut as a Cane.The previous record of 17.05m was set by current professional football player VinceWilfork Feb. 18, 2001.

Two other freshmen made an impact in thetriple jump, with John-Patrick Friday (14.87m) and Timothy Richardson (14.06m) placingthird and fourth, respectively, in the event. Both finished inside the topeight in the long jump Friday.

In sprints, sophomore Christian Cookclocked a time of 8.11 in the 60m hurdles to finish fourth, while classmate PhillipDorsett placed in fifth (6.92m) in his collegiate track debut in the 60m dash.The 4x400m relay team of Dorsett, junior Bassim El-Sabawi, Cook and sophomoreAnthony Wolliston ran to a third-place finish (3:19.75).

For the women, a deep and talented grouppicked up four second-place finishes, with seven inside the top-five.

Senior All-American Samantha Williamscontinued her success in Kentucky by logging a mark of 12.37m in her firstattempt in the triple jump. She was second in the long jump yesterday.

The 4x400m relay team of sophomore JokiraJiles, sophomore Taneisha Cordell, freshman Jamika Glades and sophomore AlexisWright passed the baton effective enough to cross the line second with a time of3:44.13. Glades also recorded a third-place finish (8.65) in the 60m hurdles,right behind second-place junior Nicole Cummings (8.54).

Junior transfer Alaine Tate notched secondin the 800m (2:10.60) in her first indoor track meet for Miami. ClassmateAlyssa McClure also had a strong sprint performance with a time of 7.40 in the60m dash to place in fourth out of 34 entries.

The Hurricanes will look to build upon thesuccess of the opening meet next weekend at the Auburn Invitational. Thetwo-day event will begin Friday, Jan. 18.
