Women's Golf Tied for Eighth at UNCG
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s golf team is tied for eighth place through 36 holes Monday at the UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament.
Miami and Morehead State are tied for eighth after both teams shot 39-over 607, one stroke behind seventh-place Elon and two strokes ahead of 10th-place Winthrop. Atop the leaderboard is East Tennessee State (2-over 570), which holds an eight-stroke advantage over second-place Maryland (10-over 578). East Carolina is in third at 21-over 589, followed by James Madison at 24-over 592 and Campbell at 30-over 598.
“The girls are still learning,” third-year head coach Patti Rizzo said. “It was a really gloomy and rainy day throughout all 36 holes, which didn’t help some of our decision making.”
Sophomores Rika Park and Leticia Ras-Anderica both enter Tuesday’s final round in the top 20. Park, who had an amazing second round, finished at 6-over 148. Beginning on hole No. 4, Park would bogey two of her first three holes and later double-bogey No. 7. However, she would rally from behind and drop three consecutive birdies on holes 14, 15 and 16. She later added a birdie on 18 to finish the back nine at even par.
Ras-Anderica also had four birdies of her own Monday. She looks to make her first top 20 finish of the fall season as she’s tied for 16th with Park.
Miami junior Carina Cuculiza made her 2012-13 season debut, competing as an individual. Cuculiza finished the day at 15-over 157, tied for 54th overall with UM freshman teammate Laura Hendee.
“I hadn’t competed since July, but I had a lot of fun being back on the course,” Carina Cuculiza said. “My putts were a little rusty and it took me about 18 holes to warm them up. Tuesday I’m going to play with no expectations and go shot for shot.”
Freshmen Christina Ocampo and Lauren Riehle are tied for 60th and 66th, respectively.
The final round of the Starmount Forest Tournament will begin with a 9 a.m. EDT shotgun start Tuesday at the Starmount Forest Country Club. Live scoring for the final round will be provided by Golfstat and available on www.HurricaneSports.com.
