Stewart Advances to Quarterfinals at NCAA East Region Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Sophomore Thandi Stewart was the spark for the Canes on the first day of competition at the NCAA Track and Field East Region Preliminary Round at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida.
Stewart clocked a 58.26, good for third in her heat, to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals where she will be one of 27 competitors vying for a trip to Des Moines, Iowa for the NCAA Championships.
On Friday, freshman Amber Monroe will compete in the discus throw at 3 p.m. Senior All-American hurdler Devon Hill will open up at 5 p.m. to contest the 110-meter hurdles on his quest for the national title. Sophomore Nicole Cummings will run the 110-meter hurdles at 5:30 p.m. and Stewart’s quarterfinal race will commence at 7:45 p.m.
Also competing for the Canes today, senior Tarika Williams who finished 41st in the 100 meters (11.98) and Samantha Williams who placed 27th in the long jump with a leap of 5.91 meters (19-4.75). Both will have one more opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships when they compete Saturday in the 4×100 relay and triple jump, respectively.
