Samantha Williams Captures Triple Jump Title

PHILADELPHIA—Day two of the world’s largest and oldest relay carnival—the Penn Relays at Franklin Field—saw the University of Miami’s Track and Field teams earn a title, garner four top-10 performances and place two student-athletes in finals.

Junior Samantha Williams out-jumped the field with a mark of 12.85 meters (42-2) in the Women’s College Long Jump to capture the 2012 title. The second-place finisher, ACC foe Karimah Shepherd of NC State, hit a mark of 12.55 (41-2.25). The women’s team turned in two more top performances with senior Tarika Williams finishing ninth in the College Women’s 100-meter Dash in a time of 11.70 to advance to Saturday’s finals, and the women’s sprint medley relay team of Williams, Jokira Jiles, Shannon Wright and Thandi Stewart crossing the line in 3:54.32. Stewart clocked a personal-best 2:08.9 split in the 800-meter leg of the race.

On the men’s side, senior All-American Devon Hill paced the Canes, finished sixth in the College Men’s 110-meter Hurdles in 13.87 to advance to Saturday’s finals. The distance-medley relay team of Connor Adams, Sean Petty, Austin Rector and Greg Kaczka turned in a time of 10:23.88 for 14th place. Running the Canes’ only sprint medley relay of the season, Bassim El-Sabawi, Christian Cook, Hill and Brian Laskowski placed 19th with a time of 3:31.10 in the Championship of America event.

The talented men’s 4×100 relay team of Jason Johnson, Hill, El-Sabawi and Cook ran a 42.29 to finish 42nd in the 88-team event.

On the field, freshman Innocent Jacob went 6.81 meters (22-4.25) in the College Men’s Long Jump to place 14th.

The Canes return to the track for the final day of competition at the storied Penn Relays when Williams and Hill compete in the finals of the 100 meters and 110-meter hurdles, respectively.  The high hurdles will go off at 3:20 p.m. and Williams takes the track at 3:35 p.m.
