PHILADELPHIA–Freshman Amber Monroe won the College Women’s Discus Throw for the University of Miami women’s track and field team on the first day of the 118th Running of the Penn Relays.
Monroe’s throw of 51.45 meters (168-9) is a personal best for the newcomer and is also the second-best distance in school history.
Senior Ashley Holmes finished 10th in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.67 meters (169-6) and sophomore Nicole Cummings jumped 5.85 meters (19-2.5) to finish 14th in the long jump.
On the track, the 4×100-meter relay team continued their success from last week’s ACC Championships by finishing third in their heat and 16th overall. Freshman Jokira Jiles started off the race and then handed the baton to senior Tarika Williams for the second leg. Williams then handed off to Cummings before the final exchange to sophomore Alyssa McClure. The quartet crossed the line in 46.14 to advance to Friday’s college final.
