Canes Complete Competition at ACC Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded their ACC Championship competition at the University of Virginia’s Lannigan Track on Saturday. Four Canes left with All-ACC honors, as others contributed with scoring performances on the last day of the three-day meet.
“I was very pleased with how the team competed this weekend,” stated Director of Track & Field and Head Coach Amy Deem. “I was especially pleased with today’s performances.”
Leading the way once again was senior All-American Devon Hill, who repeated as ACC Champion in the 110-meter hurdles. His winning time was 13.35 seconds, which broke the ACC, Championship Meet, Facility, and UM School records. Hill wasn’t done there, as he also ran on the 4×100 and 4×400-meter relays. In the 4×100, Hill teamed up with Jason Johnson, Bassim El-Sabawi and Christian Cookto make the podium with a 40.84 third-
place finish. In the 4×400, Hill teamed up with Cook, El-Sabawi and Sean Petty to place seventh in 3:15.05. Cook also posted a scoring finish in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the tape in eighth place with a time of 54.63.
“I am really happy for Devon [Hill] to end his ACC career with a fourth conference title and the ACC 110-meter hurdles record,” explained Deem.
The Miami women were paced by All-ACC performers Tarika Williams, Thandi Stewart and Samantha Williams. Tarika Williams placed third in both the 100 and 200 meters with a personal-best 100-meter time of 11.42 and a season-best 200-meter time of 23.68. Stewart placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 57.46. Samantha Williams also made the podium with a third-place finish, reaching a distance of 12.99 meters in the triple jump.
The women’s 4×100 and 4×400-meter relays both made their way to the podium after finishing second and third, respectively with season-best times of 44.96 and 3:39.50. The 4×100 team was comprised of Jokira Jiles, Tarika Williams, Nicole Cummings and Alyssa McClure, while the 4×400 team consisted of Shannon Wright, Williams, Thandi Stewart and Jiles. Cummings also posted a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.64 for her third scoring performance of the meet.
Rounding out the scoring for the women was the throwing trio of Amber Monroe, Miranda Wilson, and Ashley Holmes, who all scored in the discus after finishing fifth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.
“We know that we have to get better as a team, but the women had a very strong performance this weekend,” stated Deem. “We saw a lot of women earn personal bests and I hope this momentum will carry over to the NCAAs and even into next season.”
Virginia Tech won the men’s team championship with 153.5 points, while Clemson won the women’s team championship with 185 points.
