Hurricanes Finish Eighth at ACC Championship

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami freshman Rika Park and senior Jennifer Hirano finished among the top-25 golfers in the 2012 ACC Championships held in Greensboro, N.C., Sunday.

Duke won the team title posting a 292 in the final round. The Blue Devils shot 23-over 875 overall to claim the championship, which was 10 strokes better than second place North Carolina (33-over 885). This is Duke’s 17th title and first since 2008. Wake Forest (third, 40-over 892), Florida State (fourth, 47-over 899) and Virginia (fifth, 51-over 903) finished out the top-five. Miami (eighth, 76-over 928) shot 302 on the final day to move past Boston College (ninth, 82-over 934).

Junior Lindy Duncan of Duke captured the ACC individual title. Duncan ended three-under par for the tournament, six strokes ahead of second-place Alejandra Cangrejo (Duke), O. Kristinsdottir (Wake Forest) and Maria Salinas (Florida State).

Park improved eight strokes from Saturday’s performance to fire off an even-par 71 on Sunday, finishing with a 15-over par 228 over 54 holes to tie for 19th place in her first ACC Championship. Hirano – in her final ACC Championship – followed up with a six-over par 77 on Sunday, ending in a tie for 22nd place with 229 strokes over the three rounds.

Freshman Leticia Ras-Anderica ended the tournament tied for 29th after firing her best round with a five-over par 76 on Sunday. Freshman Shannon Pak and Sophomore Carina Cuculiza round out the Canes carding seven-over par 78 and eight-over par 79, respectively. In their final round Pak shaved off six strokes from Saturday, while Cuculiza also improved from the previous round by seven strokes.

With a combined total of 928 strokes, the Hurricanes placed eighth and are still vying for an at-large bid into the NCAA East Regional. The announcement will be made Monday, April 30.
