CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Windy conditions throughout the final day of play slowed the Hurricanes down as the University of Miami women’s golf team finished second at the Hurricane Invitational. After two rounds of playoffs the Canes (second, 306-291-321–918) fell to the No. 16 ranked Ohio State University (first, 308-297-313–918) at the Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club, on Tuesday.

Three Canes finished among the top 10 including freshmen Leticia-Ras Anderica, who tied for 7th, carded a 6-over par 77. Sophomore Carina Cuculiza and freshmen Rika Park tied for 10th after both shooting 10-over 81 in the final round.

Canes veteran and only upperclassmen, senior Jennifer Hirano, made a crucial 10 footer on the 17th hole that allowed the Canes a shot at another playoff round. Hirano headed into the last stage of the tournament in 12th position, but with the blustery conditions ended in 16th after going 9-over par 80.

Freshmen Shannon Pak finished the tourney in a tie for 38th going 15-over 86. In her final round, Pak scored the only two birdies of the day for the Hurricanes. After the sudden death playoff against Ohio State Pak mentioned that “[today] really gives us confidence because Ohio State has always been a really good top-ranked team.”

Coach Patti Rizzo had the golf world talking after leading the Canes to a second place finish. “No one in the beginning of this year would have ever thought we could ever make a playoff with Ohio State. The girls have improved a lot, they’ve been working very hard and it’s paying off.”

The Hurricanes next head to the west coast in less than two weeks to play in The Battle at Rancho Bernardo. The Battle is a three day tournament hosted by San Diego State University in San Diego, Calif., from March 18-20.
