Canes Take Third at Sir Pizza Cards Challenge

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami women’s golf team posted its best tournament finish of 2011-12 thanks to three straight rounds of consistent, low-scoring golf in the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge. The Canes shot a 13-over par 301 on Tuesday and finished in third place with a 31-over, 895 total in the tournament.

The Canes scoring average of 298.3 is its best of any tournament this year.

The 54-hole event, hosted by the University of Louisville, was contested at the Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, Fla. The course is a par-72 and 6,106 yards.

Freshmen Leticia Ras-Anderica shot a two-over par 74 to lead the Canes. The freshmen finished in a tie for 12th with teammate Shannon Pak, who carded a five-over par 77 in the third round and 222 overall.

Sophomore Carina Cuculiza and freshmen Rika Park finished tied at 19th after both shot five-over par 77 for a tournament tally of 226 . Senior Jennifer Hirano had her best showing of the tournament carding a three-over 75. Hirano ended tied 35th with a 231 total.

NC State captured the team title with a six-under par 858. Texas State followed behind shooting a 16-over 880. NC State sophomore Brittany Marchand and freshmen Augusta James topped the field at six-under 210. Marchand and James went into playoffs with Marchand coming out ahead at tournament’s end.

Next week the Canes are set to host the Hurricane Invitational, a 16 team tournament held at the par-71 Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club in Miami, Fla. Participating teams include Miami, Arkansas State, Boston College, Campbell University, Daytona State, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgetown, Georgia State, James Madison, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Longwood, Michigan, Ohio State, Oral Roberts, and Princeton.
