Hurricanes in Third After Two Rounds at Weston Hills

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — After two rounds on Monday, the University of Miami women’s golf team is in third place at the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge, which is being held at Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, Fla.
The first round featured three Canes in the top 10 at Weston Hills. Freshmen Leticia Ras-Anderica, Shannon Pak, and sophomore Carina Cuculiza, shot a 1-over-par 73, and placed them in an eight-way tie. Also in the first round and tied for 21st was freshmen Rika Park who carded a 4-over-par 76. Senior Jennifer Hirano was tied 56th after one round shooting an 8-over-par 80.
After the first round, the Canes were in second place trailing NC State (+1, 289) as a team with a score of 295 (+7). The rest of the team standings after one round were; Texas State (third, 11-over 299), South Florida (fourth, 12-over 300), Southern Mississippi (fifth, 13-over 301), host Louisville (t-sixth, 18-over 306), Kansas (t-sixth, 18-over 306), Memphis (t-eighth, 20-over 308), Missouri (t-ninth, 21-over 309), UNC Wilmington (t-ninth, 21-over 309), and Florida International (t-ninth, 12-over 309) round out the top 10 after 18.
The second round featured Shannon Pak battling into a tie for 5th firing a 73 and 146 after two rounds. Leticia Ras-Anderica fell six spots but is in good position to finish among the leaders after shooting a two-over-par 75. Ras-Anderica has an overall 148 going into tomorrow. Rika Park and Jennifer Hirano both improved in the second round. Park carded a two-over-par 74, 150 overall, while Hirano went four-over-par 76, 156 overall. Carina Cuculiza, despite battling flu-like symptoms, ended the day hitting five-over-par 77, 150 overall.
As a team, Miami heads into the third and final stage of the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge in third position carding a 593 (+17). The first round had the Canes in second shooting 295 (+7). While in the next stage the Canes shot a 298 (+10). Currently Miami is just two strokes back of Texas State (15-over 591) and 17 strokes behind first place NC State (even-par 576).
The opening two rounds were played in windy conditions and were highlighted by a hole-in-one from Sandra Sohlberg of Southern Miss. Sohlberg shot the ace on the third hole of the second round.
Miami is set to tee-off tomorrow Tuesday Feb. 28 at 8:15 a.m (ET). The Sir Pizza Cards Challenge is a 54-hole tournament being played at the par-72, 6,106-yard Weston Hills Country Club. The two-day tournament features 14 teams from around the country, nine of which are ranked in the Golfweek top-100.
