Cummings Leads Hurricanes on Day 1 of ACC Championships

BOSTON—Sophomore Nicole Cummings won the long jump and placed second in the 60-meter hurdles en route to a personal-best pentathlon for the women’s team on Day 1 of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
Thursday’s slate consisted of the multi-events. The Hurricanes earned five points in the pentathlon to rank fifth heading into Day 2 of competition. The men’s team had no competitors in the heptathlon.
The women had three in the pentathlon led by Cummings’ fifth-place finish. The Peekskill, N.Y. native scored a personal best 3,544 points after posting the competition’s best long jump mark and second-best 60-meter hurdles time, at 5.76m/18’ 10.75” and 8.79 seconds, respectively. Also scoring in the pentathlon for the Canes was senior Britney Clarke, who placed eighth with 3,395 points. Rounding out Miami’s participants was senior Rachel Dupree, who placed 12th with 3,220 points.
The Miami women, in fifth place, sit eight points behind leader Duke (13).
The action resumes tomorrow as the men’s heptathlon wraps up their final events, followed by the women’s high jump beginning the field events at Noon and the men’s one-mile run starting the track events at 1:30 p. m.
