Cummings, Williams Lead Miami at Arkansas, Iowa Events

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up their first day of split competition at the Tyson Invitational and the Iowa State Classic. The Hurricanes, fueled by momentum from day one performances, look to continue the surge for the final day of competition. Day one was highlighted by a victory and new personal and season bests.
At the Tyson Invitational, sophomore Nicole Cummings earned a victory in the women’s long jump with a season-best jump of 6.09m. She also ran a season-best time of 8.73 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.
“I was very excited to come here and jump again, said Cummings.” Getting the win was the best part and I look forward to breaking the 20-foot barrier later in the season.
Senior All-American Devon Hill qualified for Saturday’s final in the 60-meters hurdles after winning his heat in a time of 7.78 seconds, and then placing third in his semifinal heat. The finals will be run at 7:55 p.m. EST.
In Ames, Iowa, the Hurricanes were paced by Senior ACC Champion Tarika Williams, who led three Miami student-athletes into the finals of the 60 meters. Williams had the fastest time of the day with her 7.35 second finish, and was followed into the finals by sophomore Alyssa McClure with her season- best time of 7.57 seconds, and freshman Jokira Jiles clocking a personal-best time of 7.65 seconds.
Jiles also placed second in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 24.54 seconds
“I am pleased with my overall performance today, although I know that I still have room for improvement,” stated Jiles.

Senior Ashley Holmes provided the Hurricanes with another top-five finish by placing fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 17.68m. Freshman Christian Cook will look to improve on his personal-best time on Saturday when he competes in the 60-meter hurdles final after advancing in the prelims with a time of 8.22 seconds.
The day-two action in Ames, Iowa begins at Noon EST
