Oct. 28, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team held the visiting Virginia Cavaliers to just .123 hitting on Friday inside the James L. Knight Sports Complex to collect its third consecutive win in 3-0 fashion (25-18, 25-18, 25-16). Senior middle blocker Ali Becker produced 10 kills while hitting .529 with two digs and a block assist as UMiami improved to 18-3 on the season, 9-3 in conference play. The match for the Hurricanes was their annual “Dig Pink” match as the Canes showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness. The team wore pink warm-ups and pink accessories throughout the match as fans purchased pink UVolleyball shirts with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Jessica O’Shoney led Virginia (8-14, 2-10 Atlantic Coast Conference) with seven kills and hitting at a .316 clip adding a service ace and three blocks (two assisted). Senior All-America outside hitter Lane Carico led all performers with 11 kills for the Hurricanes while redshirt senior outside hitter Christine Williamson and sophomore right side Alex Johnson each staked nine kills apiece. Carico added 14 digs for her 15th double-double of the year – her third consecutive. Junior hitter/setter Nrithya Sundararaman stepped into the lineup for redshirt setter Katie Gallagher, setting up the offense with a match-high 42 assists, adding three kills, five digs and a team-leading two blocks. With the Hurricanes leading 8-5 in the third set, sophomore Taylor Hollins served five consecutive points to jump-start a run the Cavaliers could not come back from as Johnson and Becker stamped kills during the stretch. UM finished the set with Williamson and Carico each collecting kills to complete the sweep of the Cavs. Miami gets back to action Sunday, Oct. 30 when it hosts Virginia Tech in a match to be televised live on Fox Sports at 1 p.m. For more information on the University of Miami volleyball team, please log on to HurricaneSports.com.
