DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Miami Track and Field team wrapped up the first of three days of competition at the ACC Track and Field Championships at Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium on Thursday.
Junior Ashley Holmes gave the Hurricanes their first points of the championships when she placed fifth in the discus with a mark of 47.59m (156-01.00), achieving a new personal-best. Her senior teammate Miranda Wilson placed eighth in the event at 44.69m (146-07.00) and the duo gave the `Canes a total of five points heading into Friday.
Both women will compete in the hammer throw on Saturday, while Holmes will join teammate Kyla Buckley in the shot put, Friday at 1 p.m.
In his final ACC meet, senior Charles Michel ran the fourth-fastest 10,000m time in school history at 31:22.25. The The Woodinville, Wash. native will also compete in the 5,000m run Saturday evening.
Participating in four of the heptathlon’s seven events was junior Rachel Dupree. After the 100m hurdles, high jump (season-best 1.63m; 5-04.25), shot put and 200m dash, Dupree is currently in seventh place with 2,965 points. The Atlanta native will finish the multi event tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. with the long jump, followed by the javelin throw and the 800m run.
Running events begin on Friday and senior Ti’erra Brown leads the 21st-ranked women’s team and is scheduled to appear in three events over the weekend; the 100 and 400m hurdles and the 4×400 relay.
The Hampton, Va. native was just named the ACC Performer of the Week after her victory in the 100m hurdles in 13.16 seconds. It was the first time that Brown had competed in the event nine months and currently ranks as the 12th-best collegiate time in the country.
Presently, Brown is the nation’s fourth-beat 400m hurdler after running a winning time of 56.91 seconds at the Florida Relays earlier this month. Brown has earned five All-America honors in hurdle events and is the reigning U.S. Champion in the 400m hurdles.
Scheduled to join Brown in the hurdle events is fellow senior Takecia Jameson. The Upper Marlboro, Md. native was one of an unprecedented trio (Brown and twin sister Tameka) to earn All-America honors in the 2010 400m hurdles.
Freshman Thandi Stewart, holder of the nation’s No. 19 time in the 400m hurdles at 58.26 seconds, will join the seniors in the event as well as the 4×400 relay.
Junior hurdler Devon Hill will look to expand on his recent success – All-America honors in the indoor 60m hurdles – as he competes in a full slate of events over the weekend. On Friday, he will compete in the 110 and 400m prelims and Saturday he could potentially compete in both the hurdle finals and each of the relays.
