Women Sweep 400m Dash at Clemson Challenge
Jan. 15, 2011
Tameka Jameson, Thandi Stewart and Jennifer Estime swept the podium in the 400m dash for the No. 25 ranked women’s team and Devon Hill nearly broke his own school record in the 60m hurdles as the University of Miami track and field team opened the 2011 indoor season Saturday at the Clemson Challenge.
Jameson, the reigning ACC outdoor champion in the 400m dash, wasted no time in getting back in the winner’s circle as she crossed the finish line in 54.51 seconds. Freshman Thandi Stewart, competing in her first collegiate race, placed second and Jennifer Estime was third at 54.63 and 56.57 seconds respectively.
Junior Devon Hill earned the top spot in the 60m hurdles with a 7.79 second effort – just .01 of a second away from his own school record set in his ACC title heat last season.
“Tameka and Devon had strong season-opening performances today,” said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. “I was also very impressed with the way Thandi performed in the 400m dash in her first race as a Hurricane.”
Stewart and Jameson were joined by Estime and Takecia Jameson in the 400m relay and took second with a time 3:43.01.
Jason Johnson won the first long jump event of his collegiate career with a leap of 6.93m (22-09.00) in his sixth and final attempt.
Miranda Wilson set a new personal-record and moved into third place all-time in Miami’s record books with a toss of 18.78m (61-07.50) in the weight throw.
Wilson wasn’t alone in etching her name in the Hurricane record books. In her first collegiate indoor track meet, Brooke Dovell crossed the finish line in 10:35.15 in the 3,000m run – the fifth-best mark in program history.
“The team competed hard today,” added Deem. “It gave us a good measuring stick of what we need to do to prepare for the ACC and NCAA Championships.”
Other solid performances for the `Canes came from Megan Novinger in the high jump (2nd place – 1.70m (5-07.00), Ashley Holmes in the shot put (3rd place – 13.78m (45-02.50) and Matthew Wilson in the mile run (3rd place – 4:24.60).
Miami will next compete in the McCravey Memorial Track and Field Meet at the University of Kentucky’s Nutter Field House January 28-29.
