CORAL GABLES, FLA. – The inaugural UM Invitational Men’s Tennis Tournament wrapped up on Sunday, as the University of Miami men’s tennis team took home titles in two of the four singles groups.
Freshman Omar Aly completed a perfect tournament by beating Owen Long of Florida State, 6-1, 6-3 to improve his singles record at the UM Invitational to 4-0, and win group five.
Despite a loss on Sunday, senior Eduardo Pavia took home the group two title. Pavia went 3-1 in singles during the tournament, as did senior Carl Sundberg, who beat FAU’s Ervin Garibovic, 6-1, 3-6, 13-11. Arkansas’ Mike Ward was also 3-1 in the group, but because Pavia did not drop a set in his three victories, he was awarded the title.
Junior Santiago Nieto won his singles match to finish the tournament with a 3-1 singles record.
In doubles, the team of freshman Gabriel Flores and Nieto beat the team of Derek Madon and Oliver Webb of FAU, 8-6. In the final match of the day, seniors Waylon Chin and Pavia beat FSU’s Andres Bucaro and Blake Davis, 9-8 (7-3). Since Chin and Pavia were the only team to finish the UM Invitational with a 3-0 record, they were named the doubles champion for the event.
Due to his character on the court, Arkansas junior Taj Harrison was awarded the UM Invitational Sportsmanship Award at the conclusion of play.
Miami men’s tennis next travels to Gainesville for the ITA Southeast Championships starting on Oct. 21.
