Miami Volleyball Drops ACC Match at NC State, 3-0

Raleigh, N.C. – Despite 16 kills and three blocks from junior outside hitter Christine Williamson, the University of Miami volleyball team was unable to secure a win Sunday, falling to ACC opponent NC State, 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-22), at Reynolds Coliseum.
After trailing throughout the first two sets, Miami (12-4, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) was able to take an 11-7 lead over the Wolfpack in the third set following a kill from Williamson. NC State (12-5, 2-3 ACC) stormed back to take the lead, 15-14, after Brie Merriwether put down one of her three kills in the match. After the teams traded leads over the course of the next eight points, the Wolfpack took the lead for good, 18-17, following an attack error by the Hurricanes.
NC State would go on to collect the third set win, 25-22, and take the Wolfpack’s first-ever win against the Hurricanes in volleyball. Miami entered the match sporting an 11-0 record all-time against the Pack.
NC State was led by on the day by Becah Fogle with 10 kills, five digs and three blocks (two assisted). Margaret Salata also supplied nine kills and a match-high five blocks (assisted). Setter Megan Cyr setup 31 assists and went low for 11 digs in a double-double effort for the Pack. Libero Kelly Wood picked up a match-high 19 digs.
Miami was led offensively by Williamson with 16 kills – her seventh double-digit kills performance of the year, also recording three assisted blocks. Behind her with a double-double effort was junior Lane Carico with 13 kills and 13 digs. Setter Katie Gallagher amassed a match-high 34 assists to go along with seven digs. Freshman Taylor Hollins led the `Canes defensive exploits with 15 digs from her libero position.
The Hurricanes will look to get back on track Fri., Oct. 8, when they play host to Georgia Tech at the James L. Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables at 7 p.m.
