Deem Leads Americas to Continental Cup Finish

The University of Miami’s Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, Amy Deem was named the head coach of the Americas team for the IAAF/VTB Bank Continental Cup held in Split Croatia this past weekend.
The IAAF Continental Cup formally known as the IAAF World Cup in Athletics is a four continent competition between Africa, the Americas, Asia/Pacific and Europe. The Americas team was composed of athletes from NACAC (North American, Central America and Caribbean track & field federations) and South America.
The Deem-led Americas team was narrowly edged by team Europe 429 to 419.5 for second place.
On the women’s side, the Americas took titles in the 400m hurdles, 100m dash, 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay. With the men winning the 5,000m run, 400m dash, long jump, shot put, 110m hurdles, 3,000m run, 200m dash and both the 4×100 and 4x400m relays.
This isn’t the first time that Deem has headed a team in international competition. In 2007, she was the head coach of Team USA that competed in the World Championships in Osaka, Japan – leading the squad to eight medals.
Deem also was the 2001 USATF Junior National Team coach and the 2003 U.S. Explosive Events coach at the Pan-Am Games.
During her 19 year tenure at UM, Deem has coached 146 All-Americans, 12 national champions and five Olympians.
