Ti'erra Brown Claims Second All-America Honor of Championships
June 12, 2010
EUGENE, Ore. – A day after she claimed her second straight runner-up finish in the 400m hurdles, junior Ti’erra Brown placed second in the 100m hurdles, Saturday afternoon at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
For the third time in 2010, Brown earned All-America honors. Her time of 12.84 seconds was behind only Virginia Tech’s Queen Harrison at 12.67. During the indoor season, Brown placed third in the 60m hurdle final.
“It’s been an amazing experience running this year,” said Brown. “I have learned a lot about myself physically and mentally, which helped me throughout the season. I just set goals for myself and was driven to do well.”
In her career, Brown has earned a total of five All-America honors and she accounted for 16 of Miami’s 24 team points.
“Ti’erra competed well in a very strong field,” said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. “It was her first major championship in the 100m hurdles and she performed well. It was a great year for her and a great week.”
Since Deem arrived at Miami in 1990, she has coached her student-athletes to 151 All-America honors.
Sophomore Brittni Finch placed 14th in the long jump with a mark of 6.03m (19-09.50). The Dallas native collected All-America honors in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor National Championships in March. At the East Preliminary Round, Finch easily surpassed her career-best mark, with a leap of 6.43m (21-01.25).
The 24 team points for the 13th-ranked women, put them in 11th place for the championships. The result was the best since 2006, when Deem’s squad finished in a seventh place tie. The men’s and women’s teams from Texas A&M swept the team titles.
“As a staff, we had wanted to finish in the Top 10,” added Deem. “But I thought we did as well as we could have for the amount of events we were in. It was a great finish.”
The hurdles will continue to be strong for the Hurricanes next season, but Brown feels everyone will have a strong season.”With the freshmen we have coming in and the returning athletes, I think that UM will re-establish itself as a track powerhouse and come away with many individual titles and even at team championship.”
