Three Hurricanes Advance to 400m Hurdle National Championship Race

EUGENE, Ore. – Three women from the University of Miami women’s track and field team qualified for the national finals of the 400m hurdles after impressive semifinal performances, Wednesday in the first day of the NCAA National Championships at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
Brown and Tameka Jameson finished first and second respectively in the second of three 400m hurdle semifinal heats with times of 56.02 and 57.16 seconds. Takecia Jameson qualified in the third heat, by placing second at 57.16 seconds. All three juniors will race in the national final Friday at 8:15 p.m. No other school has more than one competitor in the final.
In her final collegiate race, senior Kristy Whyte narrowly missed qualifying for the 100m dash finals with a time of 11.70 seconds in first of three semifinal heats.
The men’s 4×100 opened the meet for the Hurricanes, however a missed exchange between Travis Benjamin and Brandon McGee on the final turn put the foursome out of contention for a spot in the national championship race.
Senior Deandra Doyley will be participating in the in the triple jump on Thursday. She reached Eugene with her leap of 13.14m (43-01.50) – the second-best mark of her season. Doyley, a native of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., holds the distinction of becoming the first Hurricane to earn all-conference honors at four different ACC Championships.
The lone senior competing for the men will be Cory Nelms. The Neptune, N.J. native is coming off a stellar performance at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. In the 110m hurdles he qualified for the national semifinals after he broke the school record in a time of 13.65 seconds. He is scheduled to compete in the event at 8:35 p.m. EST on Friday.
The women’s 4×400 relay, consisting of the Jameson sisters, Brown and sophomore Charlene Fuller will compete on Friday in the national semifinal at 10:05 p.m. EST.
Brown, ranked second in the nation, will also look to qualify for the national final of the 100m hurdles on Thursday at 8:55 p.m. EST.
All of the running events for the ‘Canes will feature three semifinal heats, with the top two per heat plus the next two fastest times advancing to the national championship race. In the jumping events, there will be two flights with the top nine plus ties advancing to a three attempt final. The top eight places in each event score. The points are assigned as follows: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

CBS will televise the final two hours of the meet live from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
