Hurricane Relays Dominate at Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA – The University of Miami track and field teams – with a No. 14 national ranking on the women’s side – saw three relay teams dominate the competition in the final day of the Georgia Tech Invitational, Saturday at Griffin Track.

Cory Nelms, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Travis Benjamin and Brandon McGee broke the school record in the 4x100m relay. The foursome finished second in the race with a time of 39.60 seconds.

The women’s 4×100 relay team, consisting of Charlene Fuller, Kristy White, Tarika Williams and Ashley Dukes, tied the fifth-best mark in UM history as they won the event in 43.96 seconds. It was the best 4×100 time in over four years for the `Canes.

The quartet of Tameka Jameson, Ti’erra Brown, Takecia Jameson and Tarika Williams claimed the top-spot in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:38.20. The time was more than three seconds better than the next closest opponent – Western Carolina at 3:41.61.

Brown was the only competitor to run a sub-13 second race in the 100m hurdle final, winning the event in 12.93 seconds. The junior from Hampton, Va. also finished second in the 400m hurdles with her second-best time of the season at 55.87 seconds.

Tameka Jameson was the second-best collegiate, behind only Brown in the 400m hurdles and fourth overall. The time of 56.51 seconds was also a new personal-best for the junior.

As the only collegiate participant in the 100m dash final, senior Ashley Dukes placed eighth in the event with a time of 11.76 seconds. Former Hurricane, Murielle Ahoure placed third in the final at 11.41 seconds.

In her final regular season meet, senior Kristy Whyte placed eighth in the 200m dash, crossing the finish line in 23.65 seconds. Charlene Fuller reached a new personal-best in the event at 24.06 seconds.

The Hurricanes now wait to see who will be selected to compete in the NCAA East Regional Championship that will be held in Greensboro, N.C. for the second consecutive season, May, 27-29.
