Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 39 University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped its Atlantic Coast Conference home opener to No. 19 Florida State, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Seminoles (9-1, 3-0 ACC) earned their seventh-straight win and remain undefeated in conference play at 3-0, while snapping the Hurricanes’ (5-3, 0-1) four-match win streak.

Miami’s No. 2 tandem of Keith Crowley and Hector Nieto improved to 6-0 this season, defeating Florida State’s Jean-Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles, 8-6. But the Seminoles claimed the wins at No.1 and No. 3 to take the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead.

Florida State then won three singles matches in straight sets to take the insurmountable 4-0 lead, but Miami kept battling and recorded a pair of victories. Junior Waylon Chin (8-6) got the Hurricanes on the scoreboard with the 7-6, 7-5 win over Andres Bucaro at No.5 and senior David Simon (12-6) battled back for the 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 decision at No. 6 for his team-high 12th victory of the year.

“Florida State has a very solid squad – they are very deep,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “They show why they are one of the best teams in the ACC. We exposed a few things that we need to improve and work on as we move forward in conference play next week.”

The Hurricanes return to competition on the road, with back-to-back ACC matches at Clemson on Sat., March 13, and then at Georgia Tech on Sun., March 14.
