Tameka Jameson Shines at Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami’s Tameka Jameson highlighted the `Canes outdoor track season opener at the Hurricane Invitational, held Saturday at Cobb Stadium.
Tameka Jameson opened the outdoor season with an impressive overall performance. She won the 200m dash in a personal-best time of 23.98 seconds, then the Upper Marlboro, Md. native also reached another personal-best in the 400m dash – winning the event in 53.84 seconds.
“Tameka finished the indoor season strong,” said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem. “She carried it over and had a great outdoor opener. Setting new PR’s in the first meet is very pleasing.”
Kristy Whyte and Takecia Jameson finished close behind Tameka Jameson with second and fourth-place times of 24.36 and 24.51 seconds respectively, in the 200m dash.
Miami took two of the top-three spots in the women’s 4×400 relay with the team of Takecia Jameson, Kristy Whyte, Charlene Fuller and Ashley Dukes claiming the win with a time of 44.62 seconds. The team of Deandra Doyley, Britney Clark, Christina Madry and Brittni Finch finished third at 46.17.
“I was looking forward to the 4×100 relay this season and they had a very strong opener,” added Deem. “We beat a very good conference team in Virginia Tech and that’s promising moving forward.”
The 100m hurdles featured the top three finishers from last week’s 60m hurdle final in the NCAA Indoor Championships. Queen Harrison and Kristi Castlin of Virginia Tech finished one-two and Ti’erra Brown crossed the line in third place at 13.30 seconds.
Brittni Finch led a trio of Hurricane long jumpers as she placed third, with a mark of 5.70m (18-08.50) on her first attempt. Christina Madry reached 5.75m (17-09.75) and Elyse Houston made her collegiate debut with a mark of 5.35m (16-01.75).
After winning the hammer throw on Friday (52.40m), Miranda Wilson placed third in the both the discus throw (42.05m; 137-11.00) and the shot put (13.41m; 44-00.00).
In her collegiate debut, freshman Tarika Williams was the second collegiate sprinter to cross the finish line in the 100m dash, in 11.76 seconds.
Jennifer Estime placed third in the 800m run and was the second collegiate runner to cross the line with a time 2:15.31. Janet Price finished right behind her at 2:15.84. Price was also the second collegiate runner to finish the 1,500m, in 4:42.78.
Nehali Patel was the top-collegiate finisher in the 3,000m run and Emma Steppe finished immediately behind her, with times of 11:01.84 and 11:02.85.
The reigning ACC Champion in the 60m hurdles, sophomore Devon Hill, was the top collegiate to cross the line at 14.22 seconds.
In his third attempt in the long jump, Jason Johnson reached a mark of 6.88m (22-07.00), good for a third place result.
In the men’s shot put, the defensive tackle on the football team, Micanor Regis, placed third with a heave of 13.95m (45-09.25).
The 4×400 relay team of Patrick Blackie, Hill, Brian Laskowski and Evan Hadrick placed third behind a pair of Texas squads, with a time of 3:16.93.
“Overall, we showed a lot of enthusiasm and performed very well,” said Deem. “There were many good efforts and that’s what I’d like to see out of a season-opener.”
The Hurricanes return to competition at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., April 2-3.
