Doyley Earns All-ACC Accolades in Blacksburg
Feb. 26, 2010
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Miami track and field teams set themselves up for a big final day at the ACC Indoor Championships at the Rector Field House on Friday.
In the women’s long jump, Deandra Doyley reached the third-best mark in school history with a leap of 6.45m (21-02.00). The distance was good for an All-ACC finish, as the Lauderdale Lakes native placed third. Also scoring in the event was Brittni Finch, who placed fifth at 6.30m (20-08.00). Each woman reached new personal-bests with their performance and enhanced their NCAA qualifying marks.
“The long jumpers had a big day, Deandra and Brittni both jumped personal-bests and NCAA qualifying marks,” said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem. “As a coach that’s what you love to see at the conference championships.”
Ti’erra Brown owned the best-time in the 400m dash prelims at 54.47 seconds. She along with Tameka Jameson – who ran a 55.37 – advanced to the finals, to be run Saturday at 1:10 p.m. Brown along with Takecia Jameson advanced to the finals of the 60m hurdles with times of 8.18 and 8.42 respectively.
With the second-best time in the 200m dash prelims, Takecia Jameson ran 24 seconds flat – a new personal-best for the junior.
In the preliminary heat of the 60m dash, Ashley Dukes ran a 7.44 advancing into Saturday’s final. Dukes came into the championships with the ACC season-best time of 7.33 seconds.
On the men’s side, Travis Benjamin and Lamar Miller were granted a reprieve from spring football practice and they both advanced to the 60m finals. Benjamin ran a team-best 6.77 seconds in his heat, with Miller crossing the finish line at 6.84 seconds.
A cornerback on the gridiron, but Miami’s best 400m dash runner on the track, Brandon Harris ran a 48.71 second qualifying time – his season-best time, advancing to Saturday’s final.
Although he ran a new personal-best in the 800m dash qualifying heat, at 1:52.33, Brian Laskowski narrowly missed out on advancing to the final.
Both Devon Hill and Cory Nelms advanced to the 60m hurdle final with times of 7.96 and 7.98 seconds respectively. Nelms is the defending ACC champion in the event and last year Hill placed fifth. Both will look to score in Saturday’s final.
“Our goal this indoor season was to improve each meet, and I thought we did that today. Both the men’s and women’s teams competed with a lot of confidence and heart,” added Deem.
Still yet to compete is Megan Novinger, who will look to reach the podium in the high jump, Saturday at 10 a.m.
Micanor Regis a defensive tackle for the Hurricanes football team will take part in the shot put for the men while Miranda Wilson will compete for the women in the same event.
The 4×400 relay for both the men and women are scheduled to compete. The women are the second-ranked team in the ACC and the 11th-best in the nation and are aiming for a championship showing.
