Women's Golf Finishes Eighth at Hurricane Invitational

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – Junior Christina Hirano shot one-over par 73 while fellow junior Maria Ronderos turned in a two-over par 74 as the University of Miami posted the third-best score of the day to finish eighth at the 2010 Hurricane Invitational at the Don Shula’s Golf Resort on Tuesday.

UCF (894) edged out Georgia State (895) for the team title. The Knights combined to shoot 294 in the final round for the second best score of the day. East Tennessee State recorded the best team round on Tuesday as the Buccaneers shot 292 to finish third in the tournament with a score of 896. San Diego State and Coastal Carolina rounded out the top five.

San Diego State’s Christine Wong won the individual title putting up a one-over par 217 for the tournament. After shooting three-under in the first round, Wong stayed steady with a pair of two-over par 74s in the final two round. Coastal Carolina’s Aruka Felgueroso shot four-over par 220 as the individual runner-up.

Christina Hirano delivered her lowest round of the season Tuesday. She shot one-over par 37 on the front nine and broke even with a 36 on the back nine. After shooting three-over par on Monday, Ronderos turned in another strong performance shooting two-over par 74 in the final round. She too shot even with a 36 on the front nine before shooting two-over on the back nine and finished tied for 24th in the tournament.

Sophomore Jennifer Hirano also finished the tournament tied for 24th as she fired a four-over par 76 in her final round. Freshman Shelby Gilbert shot 77 while sophomore Begona Sarabia shot 83. Freshman Melanie Kleiner, who competed as an individual, shot 83.

The Hurricanes return to action next Sunday when they travel to Kiawah Island, S.C. to take part in the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic from Feb. 21-23.
