Dec. 10, 2009
CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami’s Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem will be one of six to be inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Track and Field Hall of Fame on Sunday, Dec. 11 at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort.
Deem, in her 20th season at UM, became just the sixth woman to be in charge of both the men’s and women’s track and cross country programs when she was promoted to her current position by Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt in July of 2008.
Joining her in the 2010 class will be Zundra Feagin-Aubrey, Marilyn Burdine, J.J. Corbett, Jovennie McDuffie Fray and Andrea Scott.
Under Deem, the Hurricanes have seen 39 student-athletes combine for 135 All-American honors and 11 national championships. With Deem as her coach Miami great Lauryn Williams won the 2004 NCAA Championship in the 100-meter dash and went on to represent the United States with a Silver Medal Performance in the Athens Olympics later that season.
Just this past season, Deem guided senior sprinter Murielle Ahoure to a national championship in the indoor 200-meter dash and a total of four All-American nods.
In 2010, the track and field teams will be led by senior Kristy Whyte – the 2008 ACC Outdoor Track Performer of the Year and junior Ti’erra Brown – national runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles this past summer.
Miami opens its 2010 indoor season with the Kentucky Invitational, January 15-16 in Lexington, Ky.
