April 18, 2009
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s track and field team took fifth place as a team while the men placed ninth at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Hurricane’s own Cobb Stadium. UM’s Murielle Ahoure wins both the 100 and 200-meter dashes on the third and final day of the meet.
In similar fashion to yesterday’s trial, Ahoure and Kristy Whyte were first and third to cross the line in the 100-meter dash final, respectively. Ahoure’s time to the finish was 11.36 and Whyte reached her personal-best for the second straight day at 11.54.
Ahoure won her second event of the afternoon in the 200-meter dash. Her time of 22.98 was directly followed by her teammate Whyte, who placed second at 23.28 seconds. Whyte once again claimed a new personal best in the race. It is also the second time in as many years that a Hurricane has won both the 100 and 200 dashes on the women’s side. Whyte accomplished the feat in 2008, culminating in a performer of the year award.
After an All-ACC performance yesterday with her second place result in the long jump, junior Deandra Doyley followed that up with her fourth place finish in the triple jump. The Lauderdale Lakes native bettered her regional qualifying mark with a career-best mark of 12.28m (40-03.50), earning five points to her team’s total score.
Cory Nelms, the reigning ACC 60-meter Indoor hurdle champion, was the runner up in Saturday’s 110-meter hurdle final with a time of 14.20 seconds. The junior improved from a third place finish in the event at last year’s conference championship. Freshman Devon Hill placed fifth at 14.45, as the duo claimed 12 points for the men’s team.
Nelms and Hill were both finalists in the 400-meter hurdles as well and Nelms registered another all-ACC performance, claiming second place. His season-best time of 51.96 also improved his regional qualifying time. Hill crossed the line in sixth place with a season-best time of his own at 53.31 seconds.
Sophomore Tameka Jameson raced to a career-best and regional qualifying time of 57.07 in the 400-meter hurdles for a fourth place finish. The time also ranks fourth all-time in UM history. She was followed by fellow sophomore Ti’erra Brown who was fifth at an even 58.00 seconds.
Junior Mikese Morse leapt to a career-best 15.38m (50-05.50) in the men’s triple jump for fifth place. The mark moves the Tampa native into second place on the school’s all-time chart ahead of Santana Moss and just behind Eric Campbell (15.69m).
The women’s 4×400 relay team of Nene Kamate, Tameka Jameson, Takecia Jameson and Ena Leufroy placed fourth with a time of 3:39.92.
On the men’s side, Brandon Harris, Nelms, Patrick Blackie and Patrick O’Donnell reached a season-best time of 3:12.13 as they finished in sixth place.
Winning the overall title for the women was Florida State, registering a total of 160 points. Florida State and Virginia were the men’s co-champions as both teams scored 141 points. The Hurricane women scored 69 points while the men put 40 points on the board.
