Hurricanes Tied for Lead at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic

Kiawah Island, S.C. – University of Miami freshman Begona Sarabia shot a career-best 72, which was even-par, and the Hurricanes posted its second-best round of golf of the season shooting 12-over par 300 to take an early lead on the 43-team field at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic on Sunday at Cougar Point Golf Club.
The Hurricanes are tied for the team-lead with East Tennessee State after all five Miami golfers placed in the top 65. Four UM golfers are sitting in the top 35 out of the 215 golfers in the field. The Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic is the largest collegiate women’s golf event in the country. Of the 43 teams participating in the tournament, 21 are currently ranked in the top 100 by Golfweek.
Oral Roberts (303), Mississippi (305), Western Carolina (306) and UCF (306) round out the top five. UCF’s Stephanie Connelly leads the field after shooting two-under par 70.
Sarabia picked up four birdies on the day. She is tied for second in the event. She opened up shooting 33 on the front nine and was three-under going into the last nine rounds. After hole No. 12, she was four-under before finishing three-over par 39 on the back nine to break even.
Sophomore Christina Hirano shot 75 tying her for 19th. She birdied on holes five, eight, 13 and 14 and had 14 pars in the first round. She shot even-par 36 on the front nine and three-over par 39 on the last nine holes.
Sophomore Maria Ronderos sits at four-over par 76 tying her for 26th. She collected three birdies on the day on holes four, nine and 13. She was even-par 36 on the front nine and shot 40 on the back nine.
Freshman Jennifer Hirano is five-over par with a 77, which has her tied for 35th while senior Anabelle Paulino shot a seven-over par 79 putting her in a tie for 64th.
The Hurricanes continue play at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic hosted by College of Charleston on Monday. UM golfers will tee off between 10:25 a.m. and 11:09 a.m.
