CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team opened the 2008 portion of its schedule when it hosted Notre Dame Friday morning at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
Annika Saarnak had the top individual day for Miami, winning the 100-yard freestyle event in a time of 52.75, beating out second-place Amywren Miller who timed in at 54.05. She also placed second in the 200-yard event, coming in at 1:55.17 behind the Irish’s Christa Riggins, who finished at 1:52.28.
UM’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Saarnak, Elisabeth Torres, Kirsten Pomerleau and Ryann Labreche came in at 3:37.62, winning the event by nearly eight seconds over Notre Dame’s team of Katie Guida, Ashlee Edgell, Megan Farrell and Samantha Maxwell that finished in 3:45.54.
Labreche came away with two second-place finishes for Miami, coming in at 10:31.64 in the 1000-yard freestyle event and 5:08.46 in the 500-yard free. Other individual second place finishes for the `Canes included Pomerleau’s time of 24.78 in the 50-yard free, Britta Boesing’s 2:10.67 in the 200-yard IM, Katie Eason’s 59.05 in the 100-yard butterfly and Kelly Peloquin’s 1:07.07 in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Hurricanes’ 400-yard medley relay team of Boesing, Madgalena Waszkiewicz, Eason and Pomerleau also picked up a second place finish, finishing with a time of 3:56.36.
The `Canes will return to the water next week when they travel to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt at the Centennial Sportsplex, Friday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m.
