Hurricanes to Host UM Thanksgiving Tournament

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will be hosting the Third Annual UM Thanksgiving Tournament this Friday and Saturday, featuring Fordham, Monmouth and Butler Universities.

A Look at Monmouth
The Monmouth University women’s basketball team travels to participate in the University of Miami Thanksgiving Tournament in Coral Gables, Fla. on November 23 and 24. The Hawks enter their first game against Butler on Friday in search of their first win of the season after falling to Villanova 53-39 this past Sunday evening. MU was without the services of four starters from last season in their game against the Wildcats, but the Hawks anticipate the return of super-sub Veronica Randolph in her home state of Florida.

A Look at Butler
Butler heads into the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament with a 2-1 record on the year after falling at No. 23 Purdue on Nov. 17. The Bulldogs have been turning to the play of their post players to drive the offense in 2007-08 after finishing second in the NCAA Division I with 8.4 three pointers made per game last year. Friday’s match-up will be the first meeting between Butler and Monmouth, as well as the first game against a Northeast Conference foe for the Bulldogs in their 33-year history.

Miami (1-2) is coming off a loss to Michigan (3-0) where the Wolverines shot the lights out in the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables this past Monday night. The Hurricanes are looking to get back on track as they face off against the Fordham Rams, whom they’ve met only once previously in 1985, with UM taking the 92-73 win. Maurita Reid leads the Canes with 17.0 points per game. Miami has also led their opponents in rebounding in each of the first three games.

A Look at Fordham
Fordham comes into the UM Thanksgiving Tournament with an 0-4 record and look to get a number in the win column as they face the Hurricanes in the opening round, Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the BankUnited Center. The Rams are coming off a 42-77 loss to the 20th-ranked and fellow ACC Florida State on Nov. 20 in Tallahassee, Fla.The winner of each game the first night of competition will play Saturday night at 7 p.m. while the consolation game is set to begin at 5 p.m.
