COLUMBUS, OHIO – University of Miami junior All-American Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) dropped his quarterfinal match in singles competition on Friday evening at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship hosted by Ohio State at the Racquet Club of Columbus.

Earlier in the day, 19th ranked Vallverdu used straight sets to defeat Boise State’s No. 38 Clancy Shields, 7-6, 6-4 to advance to this evening’s quarterfinals. But in his third match of the day – his second in singles play – Vallverdu fell in a tough match to Illinois’ ninth-ranked Ryan Rowe, 7-5, 6-4.

However, Vallverdu remains alive in the consolation bracket of doubles play. The junior and freshman Carl Sundberg (Oslo, Norway) knocked off UC San Diego’s Eric Rubens and Blake Meister, 8-3, and advance to Saturday’s consolation semifinals to square off versus Texas Tech’s 10th-ranked tandem of Christian Rojmar and Bojan Szumanski.

While a pair of Hurricanes continues competition in Columbus, the remaining Miami tennis squad opened play on Friday at the Seminole Invitational in Tallahassee.

Three `Canes – senior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.), and sophomores Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) and JC Whitner (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) – picked up opening-round wins in the morning, however all three went on to fall in three sets in the afternoon round.

Junior David Rosenfeld (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and sophomore Westin Wendt (Weston, Fla./Sagemont Upper School) continue competition in the consolation round on Saturday.
