CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior guard Maurita Reid turned in 21 pints with three steals to lift Miami to an 85-42 victory over Nicholls State Friday evening at the BankUnited Center in the opening day of the UM Thanksgiving Tournament.

The 43-point victory over the Lady Colonels (0-5) marks the first time Miami (5-1) has held an opponent to 42 or fewer points since a 39-37 loss to Rutgers Jan. 27, 2001.

The Hurricanes advance to Saturday’s championship game where they will face Indiana, who defeated Wright State 73-52 earlier Friday, at 7 p.m.

Sophomore forward Brittany Denson notched her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds while junior center Carla Williams added 15 points off the bench for the Hurricane victory.

Reid scored 15 first-half points as the Hurricanes limited Nicholls State to just 26.9 percent shooting to take a 44-21 lead into the break.

Miami opened the second half with a 22-4 run through the first 11 minutes of second half and never let the Lady Colonels within 31 points of the lead to take the 85-42 victory.

Four UM players recorded at least three steals on the night led by junior guard Renee Taylor’s four. Taylor finished with 19 points.

The Hurricane freshman trio of Charmaine Clark, Eboni Sadler and Kathryn Hester also stepped up against the Lady Colonels. Clark finished with 11 rebounds and five points, Sadler led the team with four blocks and Hester recorded eight rebounds, five points and three steals.

Nicholls State’s Jamie Octave led the lady Colonels with 24 points.
