Hurricanes Fall to Cavaliers in Three Games

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Miami volleyball team dropped a three-game decision (14-30, 30-25, 30-25) to host Virginia in Atlantic Coast Conference action Saturday evening in the Cavaliers’ Memorial Gym. With the loss, the Hurricanes fall 13-12, 8-9 ACC while, the Cavaliers improve to 18-9, 13-5 ACC.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

Redshirt junior Francheska Savage tallied a team-high 11 kills while junior Jill Robinson dished out 29 assists to lead Miami.

 

Game one was all Virginia as the Cavaliers held the Hurricanes to a negative hitting percentage to run away with a 30-14 win.

 

Game two saw both teams exchange points until Miami took a 13-11 lead. The Hurricanes extended that lead until the Cavaliers tallied eight consecutive points to take the lead and claim a 30-25 victory.

 

Game three was the closest of the match as evidenced by the 11 tied score and four lead changes. The Hurricanes jumped ahead 8-5 before the Cavaliers tied the score 8-8. A point-for-point battle ensued for the rest of the game until, with the score 24-23 in Virginia’s favor, the Cavaliers notched seven-straight points to give them match point. Virginia claimed a 30-25 win three points later to seal the match victory.

 

The Cavaliers had three players post double-digit kill efforts and were led by Katie Oakes’ 14 kills.

 

The Hurricanes return to action Tuesday when they host in-state rival FloridaState at the Knight Sports Complex at 7:00 p.m.
