Helsinki, Finland (hurricanesports.com) – Former University of Miami sprinter Lauryn Williams (Rochester, Pa.) established herself as the fastest woman in the world on Monday capturing the 100-meter title at the World Track and Field Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
Williams posted a time of 10.93 seconds to edge Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell (10.95) and France’s Christine Arron (10.98) for the victory.
Williams, who looks to win a second gold medal later this week as a member of the United States 4×100-meter relay, has now won seven medals in international competition including the silver in the 100-meters at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
In 2003, Williams captured gold medals in the 100-meters and 4×100-meter relay at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominica Republic, as well as a silver medal in the 4×100-meter relay at the World Championships in Paris, France.
Williams captured the gold medal in the 100-meter and the silver medal in the 4×100-meter relay at the 2002 World Junior Track and Field Championships in Kingston, Jamaica.
Williams was a nine-time All-American while competing for the University of Miami from 2002-04, capping her Hurricane career by winning the 2004 NCAA title in the 100-meters.
