NATION’S NO. 1
Miami ace Cesar Carrillo has done what matters most better than anyone else in the NCAA over the last two seasons: win. Carrillo is 22-0 over the last two seasons and ranks sixth in NCAA history in consecutive decisions won. He was 12-0 in 2004 with a 2.69 ERA and two saves. What’s scary for opponents is the fact that he has gotten better in 2005 with 10-0 record and a 1.52 ERA, and has improved in every pitching category. He is tied for the most wins in the NCAA this season and is the only student-athlete with a 10-0 record. Carrillo’s ERA ranks seventh in the country and he has been the top pitcher in the ACC this season.
His consistent play throughout his career and in 2005 has justifiably garnered national attention. He made a live appearance on ESPN News’ Hot List on Tuesday, May 3 and his story has been told by every major newspaper in the Miami area, as well as in 41 other daily newspapers throughout the country thanks to an Associated Press article written by Tim Reynolds. Carrillo is a semi-finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and is on the watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award, the Roger Clemens Award and the Golden Spikes Award. He is the only ACC pitcher still in contention for all four awards.
32/32
As in 32 career appearances by Carrillo and 32 wins for the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes and Carrillo moved to 32-0 all-time when he pitches with a 4-3 win against Maryland on April 29.
WHERE THE STREAK STANDS
Carrillo’s win against Oral Roberts on March 31 ran his career record to 19-0 and surpassed Jerry Brust (1974-75) for the most consecutive decisions won and best start to a career at the University of Miami. His win against Maryland on April 29 ran his career record to 22-0. The win moved Carrillo ahead Ken Smith (West Virginia, 1986-87) and Tony Arnold (Texas, 1979, ’81) and into sixth place on the NCAA’s all-time consecutive decisions won list. However, Carrillo has a ways to go to reach the NCAA Division I mark of 26 consecutive decisions won, held by Wake Forest’s Kyle Sleeth (2001-2003) and BYU’s Scott Nielson (1978, ’82-83).

CAMARDESE UNDEFEATED HEADING INTO FINAL START
Senior lefty Brandon Camardese has secured the no. 2 spot in the UM rotation and will make his final regular season start against Jacksonville on Saturday. He has started 45 games over the last three seasons, more than any other Hurricane pitcher in that time. Camardese has started 46 games in his career with a 19-8 record and needs just two more starts to rank 10th on Miami’s all-time list. The left-hander has thrown a combined 247 innings with 177 career strikeouts. He has had some memorable starts in his career against some of the best teams in the nation. Camardese held fourth-ranked Long Beach State to one run in eight innings with six strikeouts and a walk to defeat the Dirtbags in 2003. He held Florida State to one hit in seven innings at Tallahassee in 2004 and earned a spot on the 2004 Coral Gables All-Regional team, pitching eight and two-thirds innings in a win against St. Bonaventure. Camardese picked up his first win of 2005 in relief against Florida on Feb. 18 and defeated Florida State on April 23 with six innings of four-hit ball in a 5-2 win. He is 5-0 this season with 30 strikeouts and 15 walks in 42 and two-thirds innings pitched.
FIRST WIN=FIRST START
Freshman Manny Miguelez went more than a month between appearances earlier this season but came on strong in the month of April, making six relief appearances and pitching 10 and one-third innings in that time. His performance in that time has been rewarded with his first career start on Sunday against Jacksonville. He picked up his first save against North Carolina on April 15, pitching three innings and giving up two hits, two unearned runs and striking out four. Miguelez earned his first career win last Saturday in a 12-8 win against Maryland. He threw three innings and gave up four hits and no runs with two walks and a strikeout. The performance earned him his first start this Saturday against Jacksonville. Miguelez has compiled a 2.40 ERA in 15 innings of work this season with 18 strikeouts and 14 walks.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Miami has scored more runs in the first inning (75) than in any other inning this season. The Hurricanes have put at least one run on the board in the first inning in 35 games and are 29-5-1 when doing so. Eighteen percent of UM’s 413 runs this season have come in the first inning.
THE CATALYST
Danny Figueroa has led off for the Hurricanes in all 42 games he has played this season and has done his job well. He has not only reached base in his first plate appearance 28 out of those 42 games, but has crossed the plate 21 times to start the scoring for Miami. Figueroa has reached base on nine singles, three doubles, nine walks, two errors, three hit-by-pitches and two home runs. The team is 20-7-1 when he reaches base in the leadoff spot and 16-4-1 when he scores from that position in the first inning. He is hitting .467 (14-for-30) in the games’ first at-bat. Danny is tied with Paco for 10th in the NCAA in runs scored per game with 57 in 42 games and he is 25th in the country with 36 walks (.86 per game).
PAINFUL RECORDS
Junior Danny Figueroa set one of the more painful Miami records by becoming the first Hurricane to be hit by a pitch twice in an inning in the first inning of the 20-1 win against Georgia Tech on March 25. Although that was a Hurricane first, being plunked certainly is not uncommon for Figueroa. Figueroa was hit by a pitch for the 32nd and 33rd times in his career in the Maryland series to set a school record. His brother, Paco, is the only current Hurricane to join him on the all-time list. Paco has been pegged 24 times in his career, the sixth-most ever by a Hurricane.

WATCH OUT FOR BIG BROTHER
Danny Figueroa is a tough act to follow, but his older (by four minutes) brother, Paco, has been up to the task. Paco hits second behind Danny in the Miami order and is having the best season of his career. He has already established single-season career highs for at-bats (173), runs (57), hits (63), doubles (12), triples (four), walks (23), stolen bases (20) and RBIs (26). In addition to his stellar play at the plate, he has played center field, right field and second base and his having one of his best seasons in the field. Below is a comparison of Paco’s year-by-year totals and his totals 42 games into this season. Career highs are in bold italics:

HERE’S THE DIFFERENCE
Danny and Paco Figueroa have played virtually their entire baseball careers together. They are identical twins and the untrained eye wouldn’t be at fault if it confused the two. Danny hits in the leadoff spot and is followed Paco. While Paco is a second baseman, he has been playing in right field, next to Danny in center, and even filled in when Danny was hampered by an early-season injury. Their statistics are even similar: Danny is batting .313 with four home runs and 25 RBIs, while Paco is hitting .364 with three home runs and 26 RBIs. Both are tied for 10th in the nation with 57 runs scored in 42 games. At least one of the twins has had a hit in 37 of the 39 games both have played in. Thankfully, the rules of baseball require them to wear different numbers so outsiders can decipher between the two. Paco wears No. 16, Danny wears No. 2.
IS THERE A BETTER COMBO?
Sophomore left fielder Jon Jay and junior third baseman Ryan Braun have formed a formidable and interchangeable offensive charge hitting in the 3 and 4 spot for the Hurricanes this season. Jay has batted in the cleanup spot 32 times, while Braun has been no. 4 in the order five times. Jay leads the team in hitting (.436) and on-base percentage (.525) and is third on the team with 45 RBIs. Braun is second on the team with a .424 average, 12 doubles and leads the team with 63 runs, 14 home runs, 64 RBIs and a .778 slugging percentage. The dynamic duo has a combined .430 average with 108 runs, 24 doubles, four triples and 109 RBIs.
Miami is the only lineup in the NCAA to have two of the nation’s top 15 batters. Braun ranks 13st in the NCAA and Jay is ranked fifth in average. Jay is second in the ACC in batting while Braun is third. If the season were to end today, Jay and Braun would have the second- and fifth-highest single-season averages in Hurricane history among players with 101-200 at-bats.

BRAUN’S BIG WEEKEND
Preseason All-American Ryan Braun went on a tear last weekend against Maryland, hitting .500 with a home run in each of the three games, eight RBIs and a double with a whopping 1.214 slugging pct. The weekend was just a microcosm of Braun’s season. He leads the Hurricanes in runs (63), hits (67), home runs (14), RBIs (64) total bases (123) and slugging percentage (.778). Braun is second on the team with a .424 average, 12 doubles and a .505 on-base percentage. He is also tied with Paco Figueroa for the team lead in steals with 20.

ADDRESSING THE NATION
Ryan Braun has quietly and consistently put up some of the best numbers in the nation this season. He is the only player to be ranked in the top 15 in home runs, runs scored, batting average, RBIs and slugging percentage. Numbers don’t tell the whole story, but they tell enough in Braun’s case. It’s not outlandish to suggest that he is one of the ACC’s and the NCAA’s most dangerous threat at the plate, given his ability to hit for average or put the ball over the fence. Braun also leads the ACC RBIs per game, runs per game, slugging percentage and total bases (123). His stats and rankings are listed below:

CLIMBING UP THE LIST
Junior Ryan Braun’s home run against Maryland on May 1 capped a big weekend at the plate and was the 41st of his career, moving him into fifth on the Miami all-time home run list. His eight RBIs in the Maryland series gave him 184 for his career and moved him within two of Frank Dominguez for seventh on the all-time ledger. The following is a list of Miami’s all-time home run leaders.

JAY AMONG HURRICANE ELITE
Jon Jay’s fifth at-bat against N.C. State on March 6 was the 300th of his career at Miami and qualified him for placement among the school’s all-time hit leaders with 300-plus career at-bats. Jay debuted at No. 2 among Hurricane greats with a .403 average (121-of-300), second only to the Philadelphia Phillies’ Pat Burrell (1996-98). Jay is now carrying a .394 career average heading into this weekend. He broke out of an 0-for-12 slump heading into the Maryland series, batting .583 for the series against the Terps. The following is a look at who Jay has etched his name next to in the Miami record books:

TALENT TRANSFERRABLE
The Hurricanes knew they were getting a talented player when Danny Valencia transferred to Miami after a stellar freshman season at UNC-Greensboro. The sophomore first baseman hit .338 and led UNCG with eight home runs, 16 doubles and 117 total bases on his way to earning Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and second-team all-conference honors. But Valencia’s smooth transition and performance thus far has been better than anticipated. Through 44 games, Valencia’s numbers at the plate compare favorably to the impressive freshman season he had at Greensboro. While his slugging percentage and batting average are lower than his freshman season, Valencia has already exceeded his RBI total against better pitching. He is batting .308 with a team-leading 13 doubles, three home runs and 51 RBIs. Valencia played a part in all three Miami runs in a 3-0 win against Pittsburgh on March 8 with two RBIs and a run scored. He had arguably the best game of his career against Virginia Tech on April 9, going 5-6 with two triples, a double and eight RBIs. He has two four-hit games this season, against Rutgers on March 18 and George Washington on Feb. 27. Below is a comparison of Valencia’s freshman and sophomore seasons:

YOUNG BUCK
Freshman second baseman Walter Diaz has made the adjustment to college pitching after a slow start. Diaz was hitting just .217 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs with a .326 slugging percentage in the first 14 games he played in. In the near two months and 29 games since then, he has turned his season completely around. Diaz is now fifth on the team in batting average (.351) and has had a hit in all but three of the last 29 games since he began his offensive outburst.
THREE TO GO FOR TOMAS
Sophomore Roger Tomas leads the Hurricanes and the ACC with five triples and is spearheading a complete team effort in hitting three-baggers. Twelve Hurricanes have ran out triples this season to compile a team total of 22. It is the most triples the team has hit since the team hit 23 triples in 1997. The 1990 Hurricanes hit the most triples in program history, 40.
LIGHTS OUT
Miami’s 7-2-1 record over the last 10 games has been due in large part to the performance of its bullpen, mainly setup man Andrew Lane and closer Chris Perez. Each has picked up a win in seven relief appearances over the 10-game stretch and Perez has tallied four saves. Lane and Perez have the team’s best ERAs in that time period and neither has allowed an extra-base hit in that time period. Both are holding opponents to .184 hitting over the last 10 games.

LANE BLAZING HIS OWN TRAIL
Junior reliever Andrew Lane is having the best season of his career and has been the top performer out of the Hurricanes’ bullpen this season. The crafty left-hander began the season as a situational reliever and has evolved into the team’s top relief option with 28 appearances in 45 games. Lane is 2-0 and has thrown 37.0 innings with 29 strikeouts, eight walks and a 1.95 ERA. In addition, Lane has only allowed only three of the 19 runners he has inherited in relief to score. He is the only Hurricane pitcher who has not given up a home run this season. His numbers this season compare favorably against the combined numbers he put up his first two years as a Hurricane.

PEREZ SHUTTING THE DOOR
Sophomore pitcher Chris Perez was the third starter in Miami’s rotation before an injury to his throwing arm and a 10-game suspension for a violation of team rules forced him to miss 18 games. He has returned, but is now closing games instead of starting them. He threw for the first time against Oral Roberts on April 1 since before the N.C. State series (March 4-6). He threw two perfect innings against the Golden Eagles on April 1 and another perfect inning on April 3, totaling four strikeouts in the three innings. Perez made two appearances in the Virginia Tech series, pitching three innings and giving up four hits, one run and striking out three. He picked up the first win since his return to run his record to 4-1 with a two-inning performance against the Hokies on April 11. Perez did not allow a hit in four and two-thirds innings of relief in the North Carolina series, picking up his first save of the season on April 16 and helping preserve a 7-7 tie on April 17. There was more dominance against Florida State, when Perez picked up a save in each of Miami’s wins. Perez earned his fourth save of the season against Maryland on April 29 and is now 4-1 this season with four saves and a 2.90 ERA.
