CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior Tim Krebs defeated Antonello Magris of Florida Atlantic in straight sets to lead the 48th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team past FAU, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Krebs, playing at No. 1 singles for the first time in his career, upended FAU’s (0-1) Magris, 6-1, 6-1 in the Hurricanes’ (1-0) first match of the 2005 dual season and the first match of first-year head coach Mario Rincon’s UM career.
Junior Eric Hechtman also won in straight sets, downing F.J. Schofield, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. spot and junior John Hoyes clinched the match with a straight-set (6-2, 6-2) win over the Owls’ J.P. Bounassar.
In doubles play, UM’s duo of Krebs and Hechtman defeated Magris and Bounassar, 8-2, in the No. 1 slot and Hoyes and senior Luis Manrique downed Schofield and Kevin Obletz, 8-4 to give the Hurricanes the doubles point.
UM returns to action Friday, February 4, traveling to Gainesville, Fla. to take on in-state rival, Florida, who is currently ranked No. 3 nationally, at 5 p.m.
