Miami Divers Head to Speedo American Cup

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A number of current and former University of Miami diving team members will travel to Minneapolis, Minn. this week to take part in the 2004 Speedo American Cup held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center beginning with qualifying rounds on Monday.
The second-annual Speedo American Cup is the final event for divers to qualify for a spot at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials later this year.
UM head diving coach Randy Ableman, sends two current divers to the competition in freshman Heather Bounds (Austin, Texas) and freshman All-American Derek Starks (Mission Viejo, Calif.).
Bounds will compete in the 10-meter platform and will join with Ohio State’s Ashley Bourland in the 10-meter synchronized platform.
Starks, the BIG EAST’s Most Outstanding Diver in 2004, takes to the board in the 3-meter springboard and the 10-meter platform and will pair with Beau Sydes in the 3-meter synchronized springboard.
Former Hurricane divers Kyle Prandi, Michelle Davison and Katie Beth Bryant will also be competing, vying for positioning at the Olympic trials.
The top six divers in the men’s and women’s 3-meter springboard and the men’s 10-meter platform, top eight from the women’s 10-meter platform and the top four from each of the synchronized events move on the American Cup finals beginning on April 8.
