The Hurricanes Remain Undefeated

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-Senior Chanivia Broussard (Miami, Fla.) scored a career-high 32 points to guide the Miami women’s basketball team to an 80-73 victory over Richmond Sunday afternoon in the Convocation Center.
The Hurricanes improve to 9-0 on the season, the best start in school history and the longest winning streak since the 1992-93 season. Richmond falls to 6-3 overall.
Broussard pulled down nine rebounds and tallied four blocked shots in 35 minutes of action.
Senior Shaquana Wilkins (Plymouth, Fla.) recorded her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Junior Melissa Knight (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 10 points and six assists.
Broussard scored 10 of UM’s 15 points in a 15-4 run to open the game. The teams traded baskets until the Spiders answered back going on a 9-4 run to cut Miami’s lead to seven with 8:40 remaining in the first half.
The Hurricanes responded with a 10-2 run owning their largest lead 34-19 (15 points) of the half with just under five minutes to play.
Miami led 39-27 at halftime. Broussard had 18 of her 32 points in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half the Hurricanes continued to control the tempo the game, forcing 19 Richmond turnovers. Miami owned its largest lead of the game 74-54 with 6:30 remaining in the game.
Richmond outscored Miami 19-6 over the final six minutes of play, cutting UM’s lead to seven (80-73) with 25 seconds remaining in the game, the closest the Spiders would come as time expired.
Miami shot 48.6 percent, compared to 43.5 percent for Richmond.
The Hurricanes return to action hosting the Gatorade Holiday Classic Dec. 28-29. Miami will face Toledo in the first round Sunday Dec. 28 at 7 p.m.
