Women's Basketball Falls In Exhibition

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami women’s basketball team opened the 2003-04 exhibition season with a 91-82 loss to the Mike White All-Star team Monday night in the Convocation Center.
Sophomore Tamara James (Dania, Fla.) led the Hurricanes with 27 points on the night. Senior Shaquana Wilkins (Plymouth, Fla.) recorded a double-double scoring 20 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Junior point guard Yalonda McCormick (Miami, Fla.) also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists, while senior Chanivia Broussard (Miami, Fla.) added 10 points.
The All-Stars went on a 17-4 over the last five minutes of the first half to take a 44-40 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Hurricanes led by as many as nine points in the first half.
In the second half the All-Stars expanded their lead to a game-high 15 points until James and Wilkins scored every point to lead UM on a 16-3 run cutting the All-Stars lead to two points with just under nine minutes left in the game.
The teams traded baskets until the All-Stars went on a 13-6 run over the last five minutes of the game improving their record to 2-0 in the exhibition season.
Alicia Abernathy led the All-Stars with 32 points and nine rebounds. She hit five-of-seven from three-point range.
The Hurricanes shot 53.0 percent for the game while the All-Stars shot 46.6 percent on the night. Miami turned the ball over 26 times, compared to 18 turnovers for the All-Stars.
The All-Stars went to the line 21 times while Miami only took nine free-throws.
Miami continues the exhibition season Nov. 17 facing the Tournament of Champions at 7 p.m.
